Long Hair and Working Out: Help!

Help!  I have a question for those of you out there with long hair.  I love how long my hair has gotten, except after a workout, when I have to work out all those tangles and knots!  Running and kickboxing make the worst mess out of my hair.  I have fine hair that tangles very easily, and it ends up wadded up in a gigantic mess of tangles after a strenuous workout.

Any ideas on how to wear long hair during a workout to prevent some of that tangling?  A regular ponytail doesn’t help.  My hair knots up the entire length of the ponytail, especially if I get really sweaty.

I thought of maybe putting some leave-in conditioner or detangling spray in my hair before I work out, but I was worried that would just cause the conditioner to mix with sweat and run into my eyes and burn.

Any ideas?!

Have you tried braiding it maybe? I have no idea about the detangler–that might work but dont know if it will do like you said or not. Hope someone else has an idea. Have a great day.

I tried braiding, but my hair is very fine, and after a lot of bouncing around, it starts to work its way out of the braid and I end up looking like a sweaty Bride of Frankenstein, with hair jutting out all over my head. I think I have the most impossible hair in the world!

I have very thick and very long hair and I do one of two things. First I always wear a headband the kind wiht the little digs in it. I put my hair up in a nice bun then I put the head band on it that way the roots dont get too tangled and I dont look insane during or after my workout (i have a lot of fly aways) lol and sometimes on days I know Im working out hard I put a tiny bit on gel in my hand and smooth it over my hair so it stays in place during the workout then after I can just brush it out quickly.

I wanted to say I have this problem too! I don’t have time to wash my hair everyday. Pony tails work ok but then my hair gets sweaty and wet and well I can’t always wash it then. I sometimes wear it in a bun and sometimes this works except it also falls down during high intense times…such as jumping jacks or jump rope…I hope you find out something that works for you!
I love my long hair and I cut it last year and donated it to Locks of Love but it has grown back some. I would love to keep it long again…my aunt has extremely long red hair (down past her butt) and she has always been my inspiration and since I was a little kid I have wanted long hair like her! So I don’t want to cut it…

Thanks for the ideas. I might try one of those stretchy head bands to keep the Bride of Frankenstein look down :)

I do a bun or half pony tail where you put it in a pony tail but the last time through you only pull it half way through. Good luck :)

Do you know what a messy bun is? Google or youtube that!

Also… If you do a leave in conditioner, you can get everything but your roots, to make it easier to work with. Get your hair all conditioned, and then french braid your hair. That should help during high intense workouts. :)

I usually go to the gym with french braid pig tails or a big ole messy bun! And I usually do my hair right after the shower when its still wet. It just helps keep it all together! :) Good luck!

my hair is also prone to tangling if i let it flop around freely because it’s very curly… i tend to just braid (or twist) my hair back and i put a tie on the ends so it doesn’t come unbraided… i suppose my leave-in conditioners may be helping the situation as well… I usually wear bandanas so conditioner running into my eyes isn’t usually an issue…

Good luck, my hair is still collar length, but just long enough for a short pony tail. But I do that and a snug headband. I am loving these ideas for when my hair grows out.
