“Why bother?”

Yesterday I had to go shopping for a suit for work.  I’ve been working so hard lately, keeping a food diary and exercising, and it depressed me when I had to buy a size larger than I thought I would.  I saw so many beautiful suits in size 6 and 8, and I kept thinking to myself that I could buy those if I hadn’t slacked off and gained back over half the weight I had lost! The suit I bought is a beautiful blue and very nice, and Gary kept telling me how nice I look in it.  Yet all I could hear was that angry voice in the back of my head calling myself fat, a failure, and then…”Why bother?”

Luckily I smacked that thought out of my head as soon as it crept in.  Why bother, indeed?  Why bother getting rid of the extra pounds that make me unhappy?  Why bother being a good role model to my stepkids?  Why bother becoming fitter, stronger, more athletic, healthier?  Why bother doing what I need to do to get back to goal weight and prove to myself I can do this?

When I looked at it that way, well, it just seemed like a supremely, insanely, ridiculously stupid question.

Great great great blog! Cuts right to the core! We bother because we matter. ^5!

yep it was a silly question cause you need to be happy with yourself. that is why thankfully you came to that realization though.

I know what you mean. I feel like that sometimes then realize it does matter.

I do this too MJ! It’s so self destructive! Why do we automatically want to give up when we’re MOST unhappy? It’s soooo counterproductive! You’d think when we realize we’re unhappy with how we look, we’d drop right there in the dressing room and do 20 push ups! lol At least that would make SENSE… but instead we contemplate throwing in the towel, which will lead to getting however-much bigger and even unhappier! We’re such complex creatures! lol

Anyway, I’m LOVING your pep talk to yourself! Would you be offended if I made a little motivational poster with those questions on it? They’re so very perfect. :)
