Me vs. Soda: Who Will Win?

In this corner: sweet, fizzy, bubbly soda that tacks on hundreds of extra calories a day, has no nutritional qualities, rots your teeth, and leads to that less-than-sexy bloated belly feeling!

In this corner: a woman determined to take better care of her body, break this addiction to soda, drink more water and be in charge of this game!

Yesterday I cut way back on soda, and today I am not going to drink any at all.  I started to type “I will try not to drink any soda”, but that mentality leaves the gate open to fail, to shrug and say “Well, I tried”, and I’m not going to do that.  I’m going to do more than try; I’m going to DO it.

I just filled my water bottle and am sipping hot tea.  So far I haven’t developed tremors, haven’t grabbed anyone by the throat in a maniacal withdrawal fit, and haven’t curled up in a fetal position in front of the soda machine at work…but it’s only 8:40 in the morning, so I have all day to do that stuff :)

When I am tempted to slip some quarters into the soda machine, I will remember making yet another promise to my 5-year-old stepdaughter that I will quit drinking soda.  The kids were so excited when Gary quit smoking, and I know they want me to stop drinking soda.  I can pour milk for them and suggest they drink water, but what good is that if I’m sitting there chugging soda by the keg?  They will learn more by what I do, not what I say, especially if what I say and do are contrary.

So…here goes…day #1 of no soda, and the first of many days that I make healthier choices.

Oh, just have to add: I was so excited last night after finishing my workout!  I did 40 minutes of Turbo Jam, 10 minutes of abs, and then hit the floor for some push-ups.  Instead of the usual “Why the hell am I doing this crap?” feeling that exercise has elicited, I finally felt excited, alive, enjoyed the sweat on my face and the remaining soreness in my legs from running the other day.  I feel like I have finally woken up.  Watch out!

Man I need to quit soda too, I know I am addicted. I’ve heard drinking fizzy water helps, I’ve tried it once but am not ready to go back yet. I LOVE it so much. I totally understand.

I don’t like replacing soda with fizzy water, because it still gives that bubbly, bloated belly feeling.

Plain water doesn’t do it for me either! I am headed out to get some unsweet tea to get me through the day.

I went to the store to get some unsweet tea, and it was so tempting to grab a Coke instead. I didn’t though!

Three weeks without soda! Good job.

Yay you made it all day with no soda!! I gave it up for lent one year and remember going through withdrawls it was the most horrible feeling I decided not to drink it and I didn’t for years. Sometimes now I crave the bubblies so if I want one and that is usually like once every 6 months I get a sprite zero. I wish you all the best for this and everytime you want one think of the sad look on your stepchildren’s faces. I know you will defeat this you’re to strong of a person.
