When You’re Ready for Real Training…
A woman at work started running about the same time I picked it up again, and we discussed running trails, shared Runner’s World magazine, and just liked talking about our new hobby together. Unfortunately there are very few safe running areas around here, and I refuse to fight traffic, red lights, intersections, and careless drivers on what is supposed to be a relaxing, cleansing workout, so I haven’t been running nearly as much as she has.
The other day she stepped into my office to brag about her distance the past weekend, and she asked me how many miles I ran over the weekend. I told her not many, since I get bored running around here and can’t find a good, safe running trail around here.
She smiled smugly, folded her arms, looking very pleased with herself, and said snottily, “Oh, well, when you are ready to train for real, let me know.”
Well now. I am proud of her for the distances she has been running, but I wasn’t terribly impressed with her sudden condescending attitude, as if running a certain number of miles now meant she had surpassed me in ways besides running. I gave her a look that sent her scurrying out the door mighty quick, then shook my head at her brattiness. Now, though, I am thinking I should thank her for being rude, because she made me feel like a challenge had been thrown down. I still think the running spots around here are boring as hell, so I am not going to attempt marathon running. I don’t enjoy it except for short distances when I can just let go, run, think.
However, if she thinks I’m not ready for real training, she better get ready to eat my dust

Wow! That was a bit uncalled for! Use it to your advantage, though. I KNOW you can take her!
Well that was a bit rude, but hey, if it motivated you to get running again, maybe it’s not all bad!
We all know you could run circles around her!!
Hee Hee Hee. I hope she was trying to be funny! I can’t imagine people REALLY talking like that to their co workers ? Grr… Let it be motivation MJ! You can DO it
People like her just kill me! All the sudden she is an expert and you should listen to her? Whatever!
Hate when people act like that! So annoying and there’s no reason for it! Good for you for taking her up on her challenge!
Oh man I would thank her for the rudeness because I would have taken it as a challenge for sure and one that I wasn’t going to lose either! Go get her girl!!
HAHA! When I read that “train for real” comment my eyes perked up…like HOW DARE SHE! People can get on such high horses sometimes…RUN HER UNDER THE TABLE MJ!!!!Whoo Hoo!!!
You go and show her real
Wow what a jerk—BRING IT ON! I know you can whip her!
How rude! I don’t like that kind of negativity… Have a really hard time tolerating it. And also tend to take it as a challenge. Go you!
