In Our Hands

It’s not easy to admit that many of our problems, including our weight problems, were assembled piece by piece with our own hands. Each bite, each swallow, each minute of inactivity that led to me needing to lose 70 pounds in the first place was orchestrated completely by me. That is hard to accept, but it is something I had to admit and face directly in order to start fixing the problem.
How easy it is to find other places to place the blame and responsibility! I am so busy, I am so stressed out, my boyfriend was eating chips so I had to have some too, I need to buy treats so the kids have something sweet, my parents are overweight, fill in the blank with any number of excuses or reasons we can drag up for how we became overweight in the first place. There is a plus side to owning the responsibility for our weight problem, and that is POWER. Yes, we had the power to put the weight on, but that also means the power to lose it is in our hands as well. We have the power to make a countless number of decisions and choices each and every day that add up to where we stand at the end of the day: in control or falling down.
Each day of decisions adds up to weeks, then months, of our choices. Over 8 months of choices and decisions added up to me losing about 70 pounds (and toying with the last 5 to 10, trying to decide where my goal weight will finally be!) I am proud of the choices I made that helped me lose weight, and as for the not-so-great choices that helped me gain a few pounds back, well, I am not thrilled about that but still find strength in knowing it is up to me, entirely and 100%, to lose it.
We hear all the time “No one can do it for you!” No, they can’t. But that also means that as each pound comes off, there is only one person who made that happen: YOU. It is ultimately up to you if you hold the disappointment of another day of poor choices, or the pride of positive, healthy decisions, in your hands at the end of each day. And it is set in motion from the moment you wake up and set your mind whether to love yourself and take care of yourself that day.
“Take your life in your own hands and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame.”
–Erica Jong
“It is not the mountains that we conquer, but ourselves.”
–Edmund Hillary
